BitRe’s monthly summary for June shows a sobering statistic – “for June 2022, on time performance over all routes operated by participating airlines (Jetstar, Qantas, QantasLink, Rex Airlines, Virgin Australia and Virgin Australia Regional Airlines) averaged 63.0 per cent for on time arrivals and 61.9 per cent for on time departures. The cancellation rate for the month was 5.8 per cent. These are the worst On Time Performance figures recorded since recording commenced in November 2003. April 2022 and May 2022 had the second worst and third worst On Time Performance figures. This month’s figures were impacted by weather related events, congestion (Sectors Flown approaching levels recorded prior to COVID-19) and other COVID-19 related issues.”
This is not limited to Australia, with cancellations and delays across the board in the UK and New Zealand, among others, and adding in school holidays has created a perfect storm.
Qantas recorded the highest percentage of cancellations (at 8.1 per cent) during the month, followed by QantasLink (at 7.0 per cent), Virgin Australia (at 5.8 per cent), Jetstar (at 5.5 per cent), Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (at 5.3 per cent) and Rex Airlines (at 0.7 per cent).
The Sydney-Melbourne route had a 15.3% cancellation rate!
